DoDEA Schools in the KMC: Complete Guide for Military Families

The Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) has one of the largest concentrations of DoDEA schools in Europe. From elementary through high school, your children will attend schools based on a feeder zone system determined by your residential address.

DoDEA Schools Overview: KMC District

The KMC falls under DoDEA Europe — Kaiserslautern District (part of the EU Central region). The district operates multiple schools serving military dependents from preschool through 12th grade.

KMC School District Structure

  • Sure Start / Pre-K: Available at select elementary schools (age 3-4)
  • Elementary Schools (K-5): Multiple schools across the KMC
  • Middle School (6-8): Kaiserslautern Middle School
  • High School (9-12): Kaiserslautern High School (KHS) and Ramstein High School (RHS)

Feeder Zone System — How School Assignment Works

Your children’s school is determined by your residential address, NOT by which base you work on. The KMC uses a feeder zone system that maps communities and villages to specific schools.

How to Find Your Feeder Zone

  1. Know your address — your off-base village/city or on-base housing area determines your zone
  2. Contact the School Liaison Office (SLO) — DSN 483-6524 / Commercial 06371-47-6524
  3. Check the official KMC Feeder Zone document — available from the SLO and 86th FSS
  4. Visit DoDEA’s school finder at dodea.edu — enter your address to find your assigned school

Important: Always Verify Your Zone

Feeder zones can change from year to year. Always contact the SLO to confirm your school assignment before making housing decisions based on school zones. The SLO can also help with zone exception requests in special circumstances.
